Trade Waste

What is Trade Waste?

Trade Waste is anything discharged to sewer other than domestic sewerage, this includes washing up water.  It is generally waste water from commercial and industrial operations and can contain substances such as chemicals, fats and other contaminants.  It may also be liquid food waste.

Who needs a Trade Waste Agreement?

All businesses that discharge trade waste into the sewerage system must have a Trade Waste Agreement.  Some examples of businesses that need a trade waste agreement include:

  • Restaurants / take away food / food manufacturers
  • Panel beaters
  • Metal product manufacturing
  • Car wash outlets
  • Dry cleaners
  • Hospitals / aged care facilities
  • Textile manufacturers
  • Printers

How do I apply for a Trade Waste Agreement?

You can obtain the application guidelines and application form:

Is there a charge for Trade Waste?

The trade waste service is charged on a user pays basis.  The fees you pay reflect the amount and type of waste you discharge.  Current fees are available on our website www.yvw.com.au.

·         Application Fee

This fee is paid when entering into or renewing a Trade Waste Agreement.  It is based on the estimated volume to be discharged to the sewer each day and covers the cost of assessing your application.

·         Trade Waste Discharge Capacity Contribution

You pay this fee to contribute to the cost of providing enough capacity in the sewerage system to service your property.  The contribution is calculated when you apply for a Trade Waste Agreement

·         Contract Fee

This fee is based on the discharge per annum specified in your trade Waste Agreement.  Depending on the volume and strength of trade waste, some customers may also be requited to pay

·         Discharge Fee

Discharge fees for trade waste depend on the volume of trade waste (measured in kilolitres) and the strength of the waste, (measured in milligrams per litre) by biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids.

What does my money go towards?

The fee covers establishment and maintenance of the contract which permits discharge of trade waste.  In addition, there are risks associated with accepting trade waste into our sewerage system.  One component of our waste management strategy includes a risk base customer audit program with the following activities:

  • Random site visitations by our sampling contractor to take samples to check the quality of the waste discharged
  • Random site visitations by our Trade Waste Compliance Officer to ensure that treatment processes and equipment are properly maintained and operating correctly and that the site is in general compliance with the terms and conditions of the Trade Waste Agreement

Under what Act is it illegal to discharge trade waste without an agreement?

Section 93 of the Water Industry Act 1994.

Are there fines if we refuse?

Yes, there are penalties of up to $20,000.

When will I be billed the Trade Waste Charge?

You will receive the quarterly charge on your next account.

Our shop is not connected to the sewer, we are on septic.  Do we need to have this agreement?

No, as you are not discharging to sewer this does not apply.

Why do I have to pay the Trade Waste fee?

Being a non domestic customer, trade waste is to help cover the charges that Melbourne Water treatment plants charge YVW to treat greasy waste.

I’ve been in business/this shop for a long time, this is the first I’ve heard of this?

A trade waste agreement is required from the date the business commenced.  As businesses focus on protecting the environment so does YVW and this is why we are contacting you now.
